Screen-work eyes
When your eyes tire before the workday ends
For adults who look at a screen for most of the day and notice tired, dry or blurry eyes by afternoon.
Long hours at a screen ask a lot of your focusing and your blinking. An exam measures both at the distance you actually work, and checks that nothing else is behind the tiredness. Then the doctor explains what she found and what may help.

What we check
Four things behind tired eyes
Focusing up close
How easily your eyes hold focus at arm's length and nearer.
Working together
Whether both eyes line up comfortably when you look at a screen.
Blinking and dryness
How well the front of each eye keeps itself wet. The doctor explains the evidence for any treatment she suggests.
Your desk
Screen height and distance, lighting and how many screens you use.
What helps
What glasses for screen distance can do
Many people are more comfortable in glasses made for the distance they work at. Some find that a short break every so often helps as much as lenses do. We tell you what we found and what we would try first.
Results vary from person to person, and we do not promise that your eyes will stop tiring. If something else is going on, the doctor says so and explains the next step, including a referral to another provider when it is needed.
- Sudden vision loss, flashes of light, a curtain over your vision, a chemical splash or an eye injury needs care now. Call our office right away or go to an emergency room. If you can't reach us, call 911.
Questions about tired eyes
Will new glasses stop my eyes from getting tired at work?
Glasses made for the distance you work at help many people feel more comfortable, but results vary. The doctor explains what she found, what may help and what a lens can and cannot do.
Why was part of my visit billed to medical insurance?
A visit about an eye problem, a disease check or a follow-up is billed to medical insurance, while a routine exam is billed to a vision plan. Many visits are a mix of both, and Leilani explains which part goes where before you pay anything.
